Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP C- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: July 1, 2009 Houma Man Dies After Pickup Overturns in Bayou Black Houma- A Houma man died after the pickup truck he was driving went off the roadway and overturned in Bayou Black along LA 182 in the Mandalay area. Brandon Smith (W/M, 23, of Houma, LA) was driving a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 eastbound on LA 182, commonly known as Bayou Black Drive. The vehicle entered a left curve, veered off the roadway slightly to the right, and overcorrected the vehicle to the left. Smith’s pickup truck then crossed the centerline and ran off the roadway to the left where it struck some trees along the bayouside. The vehicle then flipped over into the bayou and came to rest upside down with the cab of the truck totally submerged. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol use is suspected; however, blood toxicology is pending from the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Speed is suspected to be a factor, and he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The crash occurred on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at approximately 12:40 AM; however, the crash was not located and reported until 7:13 AM.
