Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Lafourche Parish Crash

Thibodaux – Shortly after 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, Troopers with Troop C responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Choctaw Road just east of Tabor Lane. The crash took the life of 54-year-old Carl Guidry of Thibodaux.

The preliminary investigation revealed Guidry was traveling west in the westbound lane of Choctaw Road in an electric wheelchair near the fog line. Guidry then steered to the left and further entered the travel lane as a 1996 Jeep Cherokee was approaching from behind in a left curve in the roadway. It was being driven by 77-year-old Charles Richard Jr. of Thibodaux. Guidry was struck by Richard’s vehicle and he suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Richard was properly restrained during the crash and was not injured.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, a standard toxicology report is pending on the part of Guidry through the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Richard submitted to a breath test which showed no alcohol present.

Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes. Troopers would also like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that making good choices, such as never driving while impaired and ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, can often be key to preventing and surviving serious crashes.
