TROOP C NEWS RELEASE Driver Charged with Vehicular Homicide in St. John the Baptist Parish Crash Wallace – On October 13, 2018 at approximately 9:40 pm, Troop C investigated a two-vehicle injury crash on LA 3213 just south of LA 18. The crash would later claim the life of 74-year-old Hubert Nicholas Jr. of Gonzales, LA. Early this morning, Troopers with Troop C arrested 21-year-old Dustin Brewer of Houma. The crash investigation revealed Brewer was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on LA 3213. As he traveled through a right curve in the roadway, Brewer’s vehicle crossed the center line and entered the northbound lane. Nicholas was traveling north on LA 3213 in a 2015 Ford F-150 when he saw Brewer in his lane. Nicholas steered to the right in an attempt to avoid Brewer, but they collided on the northbound shoulder head-on. Nicholas was properly restrained during the crash but suffered moderate injuries. He was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance Service. On October 24, 2018, Nicholas succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash. Brewer was not restrained during the crash and he suffered moderate injuries also. He was also transported to University Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance Service. Through the course of the investigation, Troopers suspected Brewer may have been impaired during the crash. A search warrant was obtained for Brewer’s medical records during his treatment and he was found to be under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crash. An arrest warrant was obtained for Brewer in St. John the Baptist Parish for vehicular homicide, careless operation, and no seat belt. Early this morning, Brewer turned himself in to the investigating Trooper and he was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center as a fugitive from St. John the Baptist Parish and is awaiting extradition.
