TROOP C NEWS RELEASE **Update** Pedestrian Killed While Crossing LA 3040 in Terrebonne Parish Houma – The pedestrian in this crash is 62-year-old Jack Basting of Houma, La. Original release - Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on February 10, 2019, Troopers with Troop C responded to a two-vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on LA 3040 just north of Hollywood Road. The crash took the life of a Houma resident. Troopers are withholding the name of the pedestrian until notification can be made to the next of kin. The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was crossing LA 3040 (Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) from west to east. As the pedestrian was crossing the left southbound lane, he was struck by a southbound 2015 Toyota Corolla being driven by 24-year-old Jerimiah Thomas of Houma. The pedestrian was then struck a second time by a 2014 Honda Accord that was following behind Thomas. It was being driven by 21-year-old Mary Schwab of Houma. Acadian Ambulance Service transported the pedestrian to Terrebonne General Medical Center where he would later die from his injuries. Thomas and Schwab were wearing their seat belts and were not injured in the crash. Impairment is unknown on the part of the pedestrian and standard toxicology tests are pending through the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Thomas and Schwab provided breath samples for alcohol and the results showed no alcohol present. Pedestrians and motorists alike are urged to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians. Contact Information:
