TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE August 30, 2015 Impairment Suspected in Crash that Killed an Unrestrained Fordoche Man in Pointe Coupee Parish Livonia, LA – Shortly before midnight on August 29, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA 77 south of LA 81 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the life of 29 year old Matthew Martin of Fordoche, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Martin was traveling southbound on LA 77 in a 2014 Toyota Tundra. As Martin entered a left hand curve, his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. Martin overcorrected to the left and his vehicle began to rotate counter clockwise. Martin’s vehicle then ran off the left side of the roadway and came to a stop after striking a tree on its passenger side. Martin was unrestrained at the time of the crash and received fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers suspect impairment to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Martin and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
