Failure to Yield Kills Driver in Lafourche Parish Crash

Des Allemands – Shortly before 9:00 a.m. this morning, Troopers with Troop C began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on US 90 at Cypress Street. The crash took the life of 65-year-old James Maddin of Des Allemands.

The preliminary investigation revealed Maddin was traveling north on Cypress Street in a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. As Maddin approached the intersection with US 90 East, he failed to yield to an oncoming 2014 Freightliner 18-wheeler being driven by 47-year-old Jerry Bishop of Water Valley, MS. Maddin entered the path of the eastbound 18-wheeler and was struck on his driver’s side. He was transported to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service where he later died of his injuries. Bishop was not injured in the crash.

Impairment is unknown as a factor on the part of Maddin and a standard toxicology report is pending through the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Bishop submitted to a breath test which showed no alcohol present. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections. Never try and “make it” across when it is unsafe to do so. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
