Speed and Impairment Suspected in Assumption Parish Fatality Crash

Napoleonville – Shortly before 7:00 p.m. last night, Troopers with Troop C began investigating a single-vehicle fatality crash on LA 1006 near Enola Road. The crash took the life of 65-year-old Gary Hebert of Paincourtville.

The preliminary investigation revealed Hebert was traveling north on LA 1006 in a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. For reasons still under investigation, Hebert ran off of the roadway in a right curve. His vehicle overturned multiple times then struck a driveway embankment. Hebert was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected during the crash. He was transported to Assumption Parish Community Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service where he died from his injuries. Troopers suspect speed and impairment to be factors in the crash and a standard toxicology report is pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers want to remind motorists of the importance of making safe driving decisions behind the wheel. Distractions, impairment, and fatigued driving continue to be factors in preventable crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
