The crash took the life of 19 year old Miranda Roberts of Deville, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 58 year old Michael Farris of Denham Springs, LA was traveling northbound on LA 16 in a 1997 Chevrolet pickup. Farris’s vehicle crossed the center line into the southbound lane and side swiped a 1998 Chevrolet pickup driven by 62 year old Perry Hartner of Greensburg, LA. Farris’s vehicle continued into the southbound lane and struck Roberts’s 1998 BMW 323 head-on. After striking Roberts, Farris’s vehicle side swiped a 2014 Nissan Maxima driven by 29 year old Daniel Rickards of Denham Springs, LA. Roberts was unrestrained and received fatal injuries as a result of the crash. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Farris was properly restrained and received minor injuries. Hartner was properly restrained and was not injured in the crash. Rickards was also properly restrained and received minor injuries. A toxicology sample will be taken from Roberts for analysis. Hartner and Rickards were given a chemical breath test and no signs of impairment were detected. During the course of their investigation, Troopers determined Farris was impaired and placed him under arrest for DWI. A toxicology sample was taken from Farris and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers booked Farris into the Livingston Parish Detention Center for DWI, Reckless Operation, Negligent Homicide, and Negligent Injuring. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
