Failure to Yield Kills Houma Woman in Terrebonne Parish Crash

Schriever – Shortly after 9:00 am this morning, Troopers with Troop C were notified of a two-vehicle fatality crash on LA 24 South at LA 311. The crash took the life of 33 year old Charleta Baker.

The preliminary investigation revealed Baker was traveling east on LA 311 in a 2012 Mazda 3. She stopped at the intersection with LA 24 South as a vehicle in the outside lane of LA 24 South was making a right turn onto LA 311. Baker accelerated forward to cross the intersection and entered the path of a southbound 2016 GMC Sierra in the inside lane of LA 24 South being driven by 24 year old Ronald Franklin of Belle Chase, LA. Franklin struck Baker on the driver’s side of her vehicle and she suffered fatal injuries. Baker was pronounced deceased on scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Franklin suffered minor to moderate injuries and was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance Service.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, standard toxicology tests are pending on the part of Baker through the Coroner’s Office. Franklin submitted a blood sample for toxicology testing and the results are pending through the State Police Crime Lab. Both Baker and Franklin were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections. Never try and “make it” across when it is unsafe to do so. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
