Mississippi Man Dies in Fatal Crash on the Veterans Memorial Bridge

St. John Parish – Shortly after 2:30 this afternoon, Troop C responded to a two-vehicle fatality crash on the Veterans Memorial Bridge. The crash took the life of 38 year old Jamie Hollingsworth of Newton, MS.

The preliminary investigation revealed Hollingsworth was traveling northbound on the Veterans Memorial Bridge (LA 3213) in a 2013 Dodge 2500 pick-up. Hollingsworth approached a large Case farm tractor that was towing a sugar cane trailer in the right lane. The tractor was being operated by 55 year old Patrick Shepard of St. James, LA. For reasons still under investigation, Hollingsworth’s vehicle struck the farm trailer from behind. Hollingsworth was not properly restrained and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. John Parish Coroner’s Office. Shepard sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. James Hospital for treatment.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash; however, standard toxicology tests are pending on the part of Hollingsworth.

While the reasons for this crash remain under investigation, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that sugar cane harvest is approaching and our highways will have large farm vehicles and equipment transporting crops. These vehicles may be slow moving and motorists should be aware of all of the traffic around them. Also, all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
