| TROOP C NEWS RELEASE February 25, 2018 ATV Operator Killed in Assumption Parish Crash Napoleonville – Shortly before 7:00 pm on February 24, 2018, Troop C was notified of a two-vehicle fatality crash involving a 4-wheeler on LA 1 at Ezekiel Street. The crash took the life of 44 year old Curtis Southall Jr. of Napoleonville. The preliminary investigation revealed Southall was traveling north on the northbound shoulder of LA 1 on a Honda Quad 4-wheeler. For unknown reasons, Southall struck a garbage can on the shoulder and was thrown from the 4-wheeler into the northbound lane of LA 1. Southall was then struck by a northbound 2012 Buick Lacrosse being driven by 80 year old James Martinez of White Castle. Southall sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. Martinez was not injured and was properly restrained. Southall was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Impairment is unknown on the part of Southall and standard toxicology tests are pending through the West Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office. Martinez provided a breath sample which showed no alcohol present. Troopers want to remind ATV users about the importance of wearing a helmet when operating or riding on an ATV as they can help to reduce injuries in the event of a crash. Louisiana law prohibits the use of ATV’s on public roadways and we ask that all operators make good decisions such as never operating these vehicles while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol or driving in a reckless manner.
