Driver Kills Pedestrian in Crash Involving a Garbage Truck

Terrebonne Parish – Shortly before 6:30 this morning, Troopers with Troop C began investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a garbage truck on LA 24 North near Technology Lane in Gray, LA. The crash took the life of 45 year old Gerald Houston of Houma.

The preliminary investigation revealed 26 year old Dylan Morris of Schriever was driving a 2018 Toyota Tundra while traveling north on LA 24 North in the left lane. Morris approached a 2017 Mack garbage truck from behind that was stopped partially on the left shoulder and left lane of LA 24. The Mack truck was being driven by 28 year old Bruce Woods of Lockport, LA. Houston was standing on the right side of the garbage truck operating the controls when Morris struck him and the garbage truck with his vehicle. Houston suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Both Morris and Woods were properly restrained and neither of them sustained any injuries.

Impairment is not suspected as a factor in the crash. The initial investigation indicated Morris was driving fatigued prior to the collision. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers want to remind motorists of the importance of making safe driving decisions behind the wheel. Distractions, impairment, speeding, and fatigued driving continue to be factors in preventable crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers want to remind you that Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
