TROOP C NEWS RELEASE September 18, 2018 Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries in Assumption Parish Crash Belle Rose – On September 17, 2018 at 8:20 a.m., Troop C investigated a serious injury crash on LA 308 near Pleasant Lane involving 64 year old Herman Desire of Belle Rose. Desire died from his injuries today at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. The preliminary investigation revealed Desire was operating a bicycle while traveling north on LA 308 in the northbound lane. Amber Sterling, 17 year old of Donaldsonville, was also traveling north on LA 308 in a 2018 Chevrolet Spark. As Sterling approached Desire from behind, an uninvolved vehicle stopped in the southbound lane across from Desire. He turned left towards the vehicle and entered Sterling’s path as she was about to pass him. Sterling struck Desire in the northbound lane and he sustained serious injuries. Desire was transported to Prevost Memorial Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service and was flown to Our Lady of the Lake by Acadian Ambulance Air Med shortly after. Impairment was not suspected on the part of Sterling and it unknown on the part of Desire. Sterling was properly restrained and was not injured. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists that they should remain as close to the right of side of the roadway as possible and are required to follow all traffic laws. Bicyclists should never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes and avoiding injuries.
