TROOP C NEWS RELEASE July 23, 2018 Houma Resident Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Terrebonne Parish Crash Gibson – Shortly after 2:30 pm on June 26, 2018, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a critical injury crash involving a single vehicle on US 90 East at the Gibson exit. The driver, 28 year old Shaunquete Smith of Houma, succumbed to her injuries last night at University Medical Center in New Orleans. The initial investigation revealed Smith was traveling east on US 90 in a 2006 Ford Fusion. It was raining heavily when, for reasons still under investigation, Smith lost control of her vehicle and ran off of the roadway to the right. Smith’s vehicle struck a concrete bridge support and she suffered critical injuries as a result. She was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance Air Med Service for treatment. Impairment was not suspected as a factor in the crash; however, a standard toxicology test is still pending from the initial crash investigation date. Smith was properly restrained at the time of the crash. Troopers would like to remind motorists that Louisiana law states no person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the current conditions. We ask that motorists reduce their speeds to maintain control of their vehicles, make sure every component of their vehicles are in proper working order, and to put on their headlights in inclement weather.
