Impaired Driver Strikes Multiple Pedestrians in Terrebonne Parish Crash

Pointe Aux Chenes – On March 30, 2018 at 6:00 pm, Troop C responded to a single-vehicle crash involving five pedestrians on Island Road south of LA 665. The crash involved an impaired driver, 45 year old Jan Breaux of Raceland, LA.

The initial investigation revealed Breaux was traveling south on Island Road in a 2003 Ford F-150. Breaux entered a right curve in the roadway, crossed the center line, and ran off of the roadway to the left. After Breaux ran off of the road, her vehicle struck five pedestrians that were fishing just past the shoulder of the roadway. Four of the five pedestrians were juveniles and the fifth was 17 years old. Three of the pedestrians received moderate to serious injuries and were flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans for treatment by Acadian Ambulance Air Med. The remaining two pedestrians were transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance Service with minor injuries.

Breaux was not injured in the crash and was wearing her seat belt. She showed signs of impairment on scene and was placed under arrest. Breaux provided a breath sample which showed her to be over the legal limit of .08g% BAC. She was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Center for DWI 3rd Offense (Felony), three counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring, 2 counts of vehicular negligent injuring, and careless operation. This investigation is ongoing.

The task of stopping impaired drivers is a joint effort of law enforcement agencies and you, the public. By never allowing an impaired driver to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and reporting dangerous drivers to law enforcement, the public can play an important role in helping to remove impaired drivers from our roadways. Making bad decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, driving while distracted, or not wearing a seat belt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.
