| TROOP C NEWS RELEASE May 17, 2018 Independence Man Killed in Three Vehicle Crash Lafourche Parish – Shortly before 5:30 this morning, Troopers with Troop C were dispatched to a three vehicle fatality crash on LA 308 south of US 90 in Raceland. The crash took the life of 28 year old Jeremy McCarroll. The preliminary investigation revealed McCarroll was traveling south on LA 308 in a 1998 Toyota pick-up truck. For unknown reasons, McCarroll crossed the center line and sideswiped a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic that was traveling north on LA 308. It was being driven by 76 year old Penny Haynes of Kenner. McCarroll then struck a 2003 Ford pick-up head-on that was being driven by 38 year old Travis Sassoni of Cut Off, LA. McCarroll was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance Service where he later died from his injuries. Haynes and Sassoni were both restrained and suffered minor injuries. They were transported to Ochsner St. Anne Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service. Impairment is unknown on the part of McCarroll and a standard toxicology report is pending. It is also unknown if he was properly restrained at the time of the crash and Troopers are continuing their investigation. Haynes and Sassoni were not suspected to be impaired. Troopers want to remind the public to avoid distracted driving and always buckle up. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
