TROOP C NEWS RELEASE May 20, 2018 Norco Man Killed in Head-on Collision in St. John the Baptist Parish Crash Edgard – At approximately 9:00 p.m. last night, Troopers with Troop C were notified of a two-vehicle fatality crash on LA 3127 near LA 640. The crash took the life of 30 year old Vicente Olguin. The preliminary investigation revealed Olguin was traveling east on LA 3127 in a 2000 Honda Accord. For unknown reasons, Olguin crossed the center line and began traveling east in the westbound lane. He also did not have his headlights on and he had a flat tire on the right rear side of his vehicle. Olguin then encountered a 2011 Toyota Camry being driven west in the westbound lane by 19 year old Kaitlyn Lassere of Thibodaux. Lassere attempted to avoid Olguin by swerving to the right, but the vehicles hit head-on. Olguin was properly restrained during the crash but suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner’s Office. Lassere was properly restrained but suffered serious injuries and was flown to University Medical Center in New Orleans by Acadian Ambulance Airmed Service. It is unknown if impairment was a factor on the part of Olguin. Standard toxicology tests and pending through the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office. Lassere was not suspected to be impaired at the time of the crash. Although the cause of this crash remains under investigation, Troopers want to remind motorists of the importance of making safe driving decisions behind the wheel. Distractions, impairment, and fatigued driving continue to be factors in preventable crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers want to remind you that Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
