Unrestrained Pointe Coupee Man Killed in Single Vehicle Fatal Crash

Maringouin Shortly after 11:30 am on July 7, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 977 south of LA Hwy 77 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the life of 56 year old Izel Givens of Maringouin, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Givens was driving a 1997 Ford F-250 southbound on LA Hwy 977. For unknown reasons Givens began to drift into the northbound lane of travel. He then overcorrected and the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway the Ford then struck a tree.

Givens was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries as a result. Driver impairment is not suspected at this time; however, a toxicology sample was taken from Givens and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained.
