TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

August 24, 2014
Driver Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Pointe Coupee Parish Crash

Ventress Shortly before 9:30 am on August 24, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 415 at LA Hwy 981 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the life of 73 year old Daniel A. Chustz of Rougon.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Chustz was driving a 2010 Ford Ranger southbound on LA Hwy 981. At the same time 30 year old Ryland Houston of Addis was driving a 2010 Dodge Ram westbound on LA Hwy 415. After coming to a stop at the stop sign of LA Hwy 981 and LA Hwy 415, Chustz attempted to make a turn onto LA Hwy 415. As he did, he pulled his Ford into the path of Houston’s Dodge. Houston attempted to avoid striking the Ranger, but was unable to do so. As a result the Ford left the roadway and entered into a ditch.

Despite the fact that he was properly restrained, Chustz was transported from the scene to Pointe Coupee General Hospital in New Roads where he later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Houston was also properly restrained, yet suffered only minor injuries. Driver impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver; however, toxicology samples were taken from both and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.
