Head-on Crash in Assumption Parish Leaves One Dead and Three Injured

Paincourtville, LA- Shortly after 11:45 pm last night, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a head-on crash on LA 70 in Assumption Parish that left one dead and three others injured.

The investigation revealed that a 1997 Ford Escort was traveling west on LA 70 near the Homerun Parkway in Assumption Parish. The Escort was being driven by Christina Paul (B/F age 24) of Belle Rose, LA. As the Escort was traveling west on LA 70, it entered the eastbound lane and attempted to pass two vehicles traveling in the westbound lane. The Escort was unable to safely pass and struck a 2009 Kia Optima, that was traveling east on LA 70, head-on. The Optima was being driven by Brittany Williams (B/F age 22) of Napoleonville, LA. Paul, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. Williams, who was properly restrained, was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with moderate injuries. The front seat passenger in the Optima, Ebony Henry (B/F age 26) of Napoleonville, LA, was properly restrained and transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with moderate injuries. The rear seat passenger in the Optima, Lakita Robertson (B/F age 23) of Napoleonville, LA, was not properly restrained and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with critical injuries.

It is unknown if impairment is a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Paul. Blood was taken from Williams and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Always make sure it is safe to pass vehicles and that you pass where it is a clearly marked passing zone. Never pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone or around blind curves. Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. Never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you have had any alcoholic beverage. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
