“Saved by the Belt” Award Presented to Cut Off Family After LA 308 Crash

On Saturday, October 4, 2014, the Louisiana State Police Troop C and Houma Police Department along with the support of the LA Highway Safety Commission will present the “Saved by the Belt” Award to a local family on behalf of the South Central Safe Community Partnership (SCSCP). The award will be given to the recipients at 1:00 pm at the Cut Off Volunteer Fire Department located at 17462 W Main Street, Cut Off, LA 70345. The fire department will also be honoring the citizens that helped rescue the children from the vehicle at the same award ceremony.

On September 12, 2014 at approximately 8:54 am, Louisiana State Police Troop C received a report of a two vehicle injury crash on LA 308 in the small town of Cut Off in Lafourche Parish. One of the drivers, Linda Roussell of Cut Off, was traveling south on LA 308 near East 74th Street in a 2011 Honda Pilot. As Roussell approached the LA 3162 bridge, she noticed a vehicle, a 1997 Toyota Avalon, enter her lane as it was overtaking an unknown northbound vehicle in a clearly marked “no passing zone”. Roussell, in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, took evasive action by steering her vehicle to the right. Her vehicle was struck in the driver’s rear quarter panel and forced off the road to the right where it rolled over onto its roof, partially submerging the vehicle in Bayou Lafourche. Roussell’s vehicle was occupied by herself along with her three young children; 1, 4, and 6 years old. Everyone inside the vehicle was properly restrained during the crash and the simple decision to Buckle Up along with the quick action of bystanders saved their lives.

Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among people of all ages. Crashes can happen at any time, on any day and the only chance of surviving a crash is to Buckle Up day or night.

**All media outlets are invited to attend the “Saved by the Belt” Presentation**
