TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

August 31, 2014
Unrestrained New Orleans Man Killed in West Baton Rouge Parish Fatal Crash

Port Allen Shortly before 4:30 am on August 31, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on I-10 near LA Hwy 415 in West Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 22 year old Reese D. Randolph of New Orleans.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 18 year old Michael A. Naquin of Gretna was driving a 2005 Nissan Xterra eastbound on I-10. For unknown reasons the Xterra ran off the roadway to the left and entered into the grassy median. The vehicle traveled through the median and then rolled several times across the westbound lanes of I-10. After rolling the vehicle came to a stop on the westbound entrance ramp of LA Hwy 415.

There were a total of five people in the vehicle, and all but one were unrestrained at the time of the crash. Naquin was unrestrained and suffered serious injuries as a result. Randolph was also unrestrained at the time of the crash. He was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Three other teenage passengers in the vehicle were transported to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. Driver impairment is not suspected; however, a toxicology sample was taken from Naquin and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.
