Head-On Crash Kills Chauvin Woman in Terrebonne Parish

Chauvin, LA- Shortly after 2:30 pm this afternoon, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a head-on fatality crash that claimed the life of a 57 year old Chauvin woman on LA 56 in Terrebonne Parish.

The investigation revealed that a 2012 Dodge Challenger was traveling south on LA 56, just south of the Duplantis Bridge. The Challenger was being driven by Jason Dehart (W/M age 28) of Bourg, LA. As the Challenger was traveling south on LA 56, it failed to negotiate a right hand curve. The Challenger crossed the center line and entered the northbound lane of LA 56 where it struck a 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis head-on. After the impact, the Mercury traveled off the road where it struck a utility pole. The Mercury was being driven by Carolyn Pellegrin (W/F age 57) of Chauvin, LA. Dehart, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center with minor injuries. A four year old passenger inside the Challenger, who was not properly restrained, received moderate injuries in the crash, and she was transported to Terrebonne Medical Center. Pellegrin, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office.

Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash for Dehart. Blood was taken from Dehart and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Dehart was arrested and charged with Vehicular Homicide, First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring, Driving Left of Center, No Driver’s License, No Seat Belt, and No Child Restraint. Impairment is not suspect for Pellegrin, but routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. Never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
