Unrestrained Napoleonville Man Killed in Assumption Parish Crash During Pursuit

Labadieville, LA- Shortly after 1 am this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that claimed the life of a 21 year old Napoleonville man on LA 308 in Assumption Parish after he failed to stop for police.

The investigation revealed that a 2005 Chrysler 300 failed to stop for Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Officers after they attempted to pull the vehicle over for speeding on LA 308. As the Sheriff’s Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle exceeded speeds of 100 miles per hour. After traveling on several different roads and highways, the Chrysler turned back onto LA 308 where it began to travel north. The Chrysler was being driven by Darrell Thomas (B/M age 21) of Napoleonville, LA. As Thomas was traveling north on LA 308, just north of the Lafourche Parish line, he failed to negotiate a left hand curve and traveled off the roadway. After leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck a culvert causing the vehicle to travel through the air, where it struck a utility pole before coming to rest. Thomas, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. Thomas was the only occupant inside the vehicle during the crash.

Speed is a factor in the crash. Impairment is unknown at this time, and routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
