Lockport Man Dies from Injuries Sustained in Crash

Lockport, LA- A Lockport man died from injuries he sustained in a crash on the morning of December 2, 2014, when his vehicle struck a tractor trailer on LA 1 in Lafourche Parish.

The crash occurred shortly before 7 am on the morning of December 2, 2014. The investigation revealed that a 2010 Ford Transit minivan was traveling south on LA 1, just south of the Bellevue Bridge, in Lockport, LA. The Ford was being driven by Ronald Carter (W/M age 21) of Lockport, LA. As the Ford was traveling south on LA 1, a 2005 Peterbilt tractor trailer pulled onto LA 1 from a private drive and attempted to make a northbound turn onto LA 1. The Peterbilt was being driven by Michael Walker (B/M age 44) of Laplace, LA. The Peterbilt pulled into the path of the southbound Ford, causing the Ford to strike the side of the Peterbilt. Walker, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. Carter, who was not wearing a seat belt, received serious injuries and was transported to LSU Interim Hospital in New Orleans, LA, where he later died from his injuries.


Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash for Carter. Walker submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.


While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.




Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
