Head-on Crash in Terrebonne Parish Leaves Two Dead and One Injured

Chauvin, LA- Shortly before 09:30 pm last night, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a head-on crash on LA 56 in Terrebonne Parish that left two dead and one injured.

The investigation revealed that a 1989 Chevrolet G10 Van was traveling south on LA 56 in Terrebonne Parish. The Chevrolet was being driven by Dale Neilson Jr. (W/M age 44) of Houma, LA. For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet crossed the center line and entered the northbound lane of LA 56 as it was traveling south. At the same time, a 2005 GMC Canyon Pickup Truck was traveling north on LA 56 approaching the Chevrolet. The GMC was being driven by Gene Fanguy (W/M age 55) of Chauvin, LA. The GMC was unable to avoid the Chevrolet, and the two vehicles struck in the northbound lane of LA 56. Both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Fanguy was properly restrained at the time of the crash, while Neilson was not properly restrained. A 19 year old female passenger in the GMC, who was wearing a seat belt, received moderate injuries in the crash and was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center.

Alcohol impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash on the part of Neilson. Routine toxicology tests are pending for both drivers. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. While there have been fewer deaths associated with impaired driving in recent years, there is still much room for improvement. Never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you have had any alcoholic beverage. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
