Three Vehicle Crash Claims the Life of a Thibodaux Man

Houma, LA- Shortly before 10:00 pm last night, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a three vehicle fatality crash that claimed the life of a Thibodaux man on LA 311 in Terrebonne Parish after he lost control of his vehicle.

The investigation revealed that a 2002 Honda Accord was traveling south on LA 311, just north of Equity Blvd. The Accord was being driven by Chad Labat (W/M age 34) of Thibodaux, LA. For unknown reasons, the Accord rotated counter clockwise as it crossed the center line and entered the northbound lane of LA 311. At the same time, a 2015 Honda Accord was traveling north on LA 311. The 2015 Accord was being driven by Kirk Craig (B/M age 53) of Metairie, LA. The two vehicles struck in the northbound lane, causing the 2002 Accord to split into three pieces. Labat was ejected from the vehicle during the impact. After the impact, one of the pieces of the 2002 Accord struck a 1994 Chevrolet Truck that was traveling north on LA 311. The Chevrolet was being driven by August Bennett (B/M age 49) of Belle Rose, LA. Labat was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Due to the damage sustained by the 2002 Accord, it is unclear at this time if Labat was wearing a seat belt. Craig, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center with moderate injuries. Bennett, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending for Labat. Blood was taken from both Craig and Bennett. The test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists to slow down when it’s raining or if the roads are wet. Always turn the vehicle lights on in bad weather situations, so other vehicles can see you and judge their distance better. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
