Driver and Child Killed in Submerged Vehicle in Terrebonne Parish

Dularge, LA- Shortly before 5 PM this afternoon, a 31 year old Theriot woman and her daughter were killed when she lost control of her vehicle on LA 315 in Terrebonne Parish, causing her vehicle to overturn and become submerged in a canal.

The investigation revealed that a 2008 Nissan Titan was traveling north on LA 315, three miles south of the Falgout Canal Road, in Terrebonne Parish. The Titan was being driven by Ashley Worrell, (W/F age 31) of Theriot, LA. As the Titan was traveling north, it traveled off the right side of LA 315. Worrell, in an attempt to get back on the road, overcorrected to the left and caused the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise across LA 315. The Titan then traveled off the left side of LA 315 where it entered a canal and overturned. The driver and passenger were pulled from the submerged vehicle by volunteer firefighters. Worrell was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. The passenger in the vehicle was Delaney Lirette, (W/F age 3) of Theriot, LA, and was the daughter of the driver. The three year old was transported to Terrebonne General Hospital, but was pronounced dead at the hospital. While there was a child seat in the Titan, it is unclear if the occupants were restrained at the time of the crash.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind everyone to remain safe on the roads, and never drive distracted. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
