TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE December 8, 2013 Unrestrained Passenger Killed on LA 182 in Lafourche Parish Raceland, LA- Shortly after 3 PM this afternoon, a 21 year old unrestrained passenger was killed after the vehicle he was riding in crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head-on. The investigation revealed that a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling west on LA 182 in Raceland, LA. The Malibu was being driven by Alfred Carter IV, (B/M age 24) of Thibodaux, LA. For unknown reasons, the Malibu crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Volvo V50 head-on that was traveling east on LA 182. The Volvo was being driven by Loraine Bourgeois, (W/F age 65) of Metairie, LA. Alfred Carter IV, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital with severe injuries. The passenger in the Malibu, Andrew Carter (B/M age 21) of Thibodaux, LA, was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Bourgeois, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital with severe injuries. Alcohol use is unknown at this time, but is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results will be pending at the State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings and to avoid distractions while behind the wheel of a vehicle. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. | |||
