Fiery Fatality Crash on LA 308 in Assumption Parish

Napoleonville, LA- Shortly before 6 AM this morning, a 58 year old Thibodaux man was killed when his vehicle caught fire after striking a tractor trailer on LA 308 in Assumption Parish.

The investigation revealed that a 1999 West Star Tractor Trailer was traveling west on Nellie Street approaching the LA 308 intersection in Napoleonville, LA. The tractor trailer was being driven by David Alberes, (W/M age 48) of Belle Rose, LA. When the tractor trailer reached the intersection, it made a left turn into the southbound lane of LA 308. Halfway through the turn the trailer was struck by a 2008 Nissan Titan pickup truck traveling north on LA 308 at a high rate of speed. The Nissan was being driven by Don Williams Jr., (B/M age 58) of Thibodaux, LA. After impacting the trailer, the Nissan caught fire and was soon engulfed in flames. The driver was unable to escape the vehicle and perished in the fire. Williams, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. Alberes, who was not wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash.

Speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash for the Nissan. Alberes submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. Alcohol use is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending for Williams. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings, obey the posted speed limits, and avoid distractions while behind the wheel of a vehicle. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
