TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE November 15, 2013 Off-Duty Deputy Dies in Motorcycle Crash in Terrebonne Parish Houma, LA- Shortly after 7 PM yesterday afternoon, a 23 year old off-duty Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed after his motorcycle slid into a vehicle that pulled out in front of him on Bayou Gardens Blvd in Terrebonne Parish. The investigation revealed that a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on Bayou Gardens Blvd near the Southland Mall. The motorcycle was being driven by Taylor Segura, (W/M age 23) of Houma, LA. As the motorcycle was traveling on Bayou Gardens Blvd a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo failed to yield and pulled out of the Southland Mall parking lot into the path of the motorcycle. The Chevrolet was being driven by a sixteen year old female from Raceland, LA. Segura attempted to avoid the collision by steering to the left and applying the rear brakes on his motorcycle. As a result of his actions, the motorcycle went down on its left side and slid into the driver’s side door of the Chevrolet. Shortly after the impact, both vehicles became engulfed in flames as a result of the crash. Witnesses removed Segura from the roadway and all the occupants of the Chevrolet escaped unharmed. Segura, who was wearing a US D.O.T. helmet, died while being transported to Terrebonne General Hospital due to his injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Chevrolet and her passengers, who were all wearing seat belts, were not injured in the crash. Investigating Troopers report that alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The driver of the Chevrolet submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Segura. This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings and to avoid distractions while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death. | |||
