TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE October 27, 2013 Lack of Seat Belt and Speed Factors for Morning Fatality Crash in St. John Parish Vacherie, LA- Shortly before 6:30 AM this morning, Louisiana State Police Troop C investigated a fatality crash on LA 3127 in St. John Parish where a driver later died at the hospital after striking a dump truck that pulled out onto the roadway. The investigation revealed that a 1995 Toyota Camry was traveling north on LA 3127 near LA 640 in heavy patches of fog. The Camry was being driven by Carl Sanders (B/M age 29) of Harvey, LA. As the Camry was traveling north it struck a 1995 Freightliner Dump Truck that pulled out of a private drive onto LA 3127. The Freightliner was being driven by Titus Stewart (B/M age 30) of Reserve, LA. Sanders, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital where he later died from his injuries sustained in the crash. Stewart, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. The Camry’s speed in the heavy fog was a contributing factor in the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending at the St. John Parish Coroner’s Office for Sanders. Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings and drive at the proper speeds for the prevailing weather conditions. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police. Contact Information: Tfc.
