TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE May 27, 2014 Unrestrained Child Killed after being Ejected from a Vehicle in Lafourche Parish Crash Thibodaux, LA- Shortly after 09:00 AM this morning, an 11 year old girl was killed when the vehicle she was riding in traveled off the road and rolled over, causing her to be ejected from the vehicle. The investigation revealed that a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer was traveling south on LA 1 near Waverly Road in Thibodaux, LA. The Lancer was being driven by Jermaine Wooden, (B/M age 35) of Napoleonville, LA. After passing several vehicles on LA 1 in the northbound lane, the Lancer attempted to re-enter the southbound lane but lost control and traveled off the right side of the roadway. The Lancer began to rotate and rolled over, ejecting an 11 year old girl from the vehicle. The 11 year old, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Wooden, who was wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries and was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. The front seat passenger and two other children, who were all wearing seat belts, were transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Wooden and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation. Always make sure that children are buckled or in the proper child restraints at all times. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. | |||
