The investigation revealed that a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on LA 1, north of the Valentine Bridge, in Lafourche Parish. The Silverado was being driven by Michael Costello, (W/M age 20) of Golden Meadow, LA. For unknown reasons, the Silverado crossed the centerline of LA 1 as it was traveling around a right hand curve and struck a southbound 1997 Jeep Cherokee head-on. Dufrene, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans, LA, where he later died from his injuries sustained in the crash. Investigating Troopers report that alcohol may be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Costello and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists to always be aware of their surroundings, and avoid distractions while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you have had anything to drink. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. | |||
