TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE June 16, 2014 Unrestrained Children Ejected from Vehicle in Assumption Parish Crash Napoleonville, LA- Shortly before 9 PM yesterday evening, an 8 year old child was killed and two other children injured when the vehicle they were riding in traveled off the road and rolled over, causing all the occupants to be ejected. The investigation revealed that a 2008 Chevrolet Impala was traveling north on LA 1 near Howard Lane in Assumption Parish. The Impala was being driven by Brian Gilton, (B/M age 26) of Napoleonville, LA. For unknown reasons, the Impala traveled off the right side of the highway where it struck a culvert, a utility pole, and then overturned. As the vehicle overturned, it ejected Gilton and his three children, a 4, 5, and 8 year old. Gilton, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with moderate injuries. The 8 year old was identified as Jaedan Holliday (B/M) of Napoleonville, LA. Holliday, who was not restrained, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. The other two children, who were not restrained, were transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital with minor injuries. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from Gilton and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation. Always make sure that children are buckled or in the proper child restraints at all times. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. | |||
