Motorcyclist Dies on LA 182 in Terrebonne Parish

Houma, LA- Shortly after 3 PM this afternoon, a 31 year old motorcyclist was killed on LA 182 after he was ejected from his motorcycle when a vehicle failed to yield and turned into his path.

The investigation revealed that a 2012 Suzuki GSXR1300 motorcycle was traveling west on LA 182 approaching Savanne Road in Houma, LA. The motorcycle was being driven by Paul Bunopane, (W/M age 31) of Thibodaux, LA. At that same time, a 2009 Toyota Rav4 was traveling east on LA 182 approaching Savanne Road. The Toyota was being driven by Ernest Delaune Jr., (W/M age 40) of Raceland, LA. Delaune failed to yield to the motorcycle and attempted to make a left turn onto Savanne Road. Bunopane was unable to avoid the Toyota and struck the vehicle on its side, causing Bunopane to be ejected from his motorcycle. Bunopane, who was wearing a US D.O.T. helmet, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Delaune, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the crash.

Investigating Troopers report that alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Delaune submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Bunopane. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists that driving at high speeds is dangerous, and often leads to serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
