TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE February 26, 2014 Man Killed and Another Injured in Early Morning Assumption Crash Amelia, LA- Shortly before 5:30 AM this morning, a 34 year old man was killed when his vehicle traveled off the road in Assumption Parish. The investigation revealed that a 2005 Nissan Titan was traveling east on LA 182 near LA 662 in Amelia, LA. The Titan was being driven by Aurelio Montelongo-Hernandez, (O/M age 34) of Bayou Vista, LA. The Titan traveled off the left side of the road where it rolled over and struck several trees. Montelongo-Hernandez, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. The front seat passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, received minor injuries and was transported to Tech Hospital in Morgan City, LA. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, and routine toxicology tests are pending. It was raining at the time of the crash, and an inspection of the vehicle indicated that the rear tread on the tires was low. Low tread depth combined with traveling to fast for road conditions may have been factors in the crash. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind motorists to always reduce speeds when traveling in poor weather conditions. Always inspect all your tires on a regular bases for the proper tread depth and air pressure. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. | |||
