LSP and DOTD Partner with New Signage to Reduce Incidents on I-12

Livingston Parish – Road construction and traffic delays may seem like a way of life, but aggressive driving should not be. Louisiana State Police Troop A has partnered with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) in an effort to reduce the amount of incidents on the I-12 corridor construction zones in Livingston Parish.

With the recent increase of construction for the road widening project on I-12 in Livingston Parish, Troopers have responded to several crashes which have blocked and or closed lanes of travel. These lane closures can cause serious inconveniences for the motoring public. However, along with the construction zones and lane closures, Troopers have noticed an increase in aggressive driving. In an attempt to reduce the number of incidents and aggressive driving on I-12, State Police have partnered with DOTD to install “Trucks Use Right Lane” signage in the construction zones along I-12. These signs are meant for the drivers of commercial motor vehicles (“18-wheelers”) to use only the right hand lane in the construction zones on both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-12 from Walker, LA to the Tangipahoa Parish line.

Many motorists may be familiar with these signs as they are prevalent on the Whiskey Bay Bridge on I-10. Troopers and DOTD hope that these signs will place commercial motor vehicles in the right hand lane and smaller vehicles in the left hand lane. This should create a smoother traffic flow and a safer environment not only for large truck drivers, but for the motoring public and construction zone workers as well. However, along with the signage Troopers and DOTD ask that motorists continue to observe the “left lane law” that states that slower traffic should move to the right hand lane when possible.

Several crashes in the I-12 construction zone have been caused by aggressive drivers, and Troopers will be actively patrolling for and ticketing aggressive and reckless drivers. Effective immediately, enforcement of commercial motor vehicles in the right lane only has begun. Troopers will be vigilant in enforcing this new regulation and seeking out aggressive drivers in an attempt to make the I-12 corridor as safe as possible.

Louisiana State Troopers will remain dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of the people in the state. Troopers would like to remind the public to drive safely and exercise extra patience on the roads, especially in Interstate construction zones. Motorists that witness hazardous or dangerous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
