Bicyclist Struck and Killed on LA 24

Gray, LA- Shortly before 10 pm yesterday evening, a bicyclist was struck on LA 24 in Terrebonne Parish and later died from his injuries.

The investigation revealed that the bicyclist attempted to cross both lanes of LA 24 North, near LA 316. The bicycle was being operated by Richard Barnes (W/M age 55) of Thibodaux, LA. As the bicycle attempted to cross both lanes, he crossed into the path of a northbound vehicle. The bicyclist was struck by a 1993 GMC pickup truck that was traveling north on LA 24 in the left lane. The GMC was being driven by Dale Jackson (B/M age 70) of Houma, LA. Barnes was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, but later died from his injuries sustained in the crash. Jackson, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured in the crash.

Alcohol use is suspected at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending for Barnes. Jackson submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.

Never operate any form of transportation if you have had anything to drink. Always have a plan in place prior to consuming any alcohol. According to Louisiana State Law, bicycles must travel in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws. Remember to always be aware of your surroundings.
