TROOP C NEWS RELEASE December 27, 2016 Failure to Yield Kills One in Assumption Parish Crash Paincourtville, LA – Shortly after 7:00 pm this evening, Troopers from Troop C responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on LA 70 at the intersection with LA Spur 70. The crash claimed the life of 20 year old Aja Brown of Houma, LA. The preliminary investigation revealed 21 year old Taris Gregory of Napoleonville, LA was traveling west on LA 70 in a 2016 Honda Civic. Gregory began to make a left turn onto LA Spur 70 in front of an eastbound 2000 Ford Excursion being driven by 47 year old Paulette Pursley of Riceville, TN. Pursley struck Gregory’s vehicle on the passenger side in the intersection and both vehicles traveled off of the roadway. Brown was the front seat passenger on Gregory’s vehicle and was properly restrained; however, she sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Brown was pronounced deceased by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. Gregory was wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge for treatment. Pursley was also wearing her seat belt and did not report any injuries. Alcohol and drug involvement is not suspect as a factor in the crash. A blood sample was collected from Gregory and standard toxicology tests are pending. Pursley provided a breath sample with no alcohol detected. Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or across intersections. Always watch vehicles as they approach and gauge the distance they are covering as they approach. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
