Speed and Alcohol Suspected in Lafourche Parish Fatality

Bayou Blue – Shortly before 11:00 pm last night, Troopers from Troop C were notified of a single-vehicle fatality on LA 316 near Country Estates Drive. The crash took the life of 67 year old Houma resident Clem Whitmire.

The preliminary investigation revealed Whitmire was traveling north on LA 316 in a 2015 Dodge Charger at a high rate of speed. He entered a left curve and ran off of the roadway to the right. Whitmire’s vehicle overturned several times and struck two utility poles before coming to rest. Whitmire sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

Alcohol use is suspected as a factor in the crash and standard toxicology reports are pending. Whitmire was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Troopers urge drivers and occupants to have a plan in place when consuming alcohol to make sure someone does not drive impaired. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
