Unrestrained Driver Dies in Terrebonne Parish Crash

Schriever, LA – Shortly after 12:00 a.m. this morning, Troopers from Troop C responded to a three-vehicle crash involving a fatality on LA 20 near Ducros Street in Schriever. The crash took the life of 22 year old Gabriel Castille of Thibodaux, LA.

The preliminary investigation revealed 24 year old Houma resident Chad Willett was driving a 2013 Mazda 3 north on LA 20 in the left lane. Willett was following behind a 2011 Nissan Maxima being driven by Rhonda Declouet, 43 year old of Patterson, LA. Declouet started to slow down to make a left turn and Willett began to change into the right lane. The right lane was occupied by Castille who was driving a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle. Castille steered to the left to avoid striking Willett and she impacted the rear of Declouet’s vehicle. Castille’s vehicle rolled over as a result of the impact. She was unrestrained during the crash and was ejected from her vehicle. Castille sustained fatal injuries and she was pronounced deceased on scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Willett and Declouet were not injured in the crash.

Impairment is not suspected as a factor in the crash; however, standard toxicology tests on the part of Castille are pending. Willett and Declouet submitted a breath sample which resulted in no alcohol present. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
