Troopers Arrest Houma Woman in Insurance Fraud Scheme

Houma, LA – In March of this year, Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud / Auto Theft unit in Houma was contacted by fraud investigators with Progressive Insurance Company concerning fraudulent insurance claims made in June of 2014. Troopers investigated the criminal complaint made by Progressive and arrested 38 year old Houma resident Shanta Simmons this morning.

Progressive Insurance provided Troopers with information alleging Simmons was submitting fraudulent medical bills from Terrebonne General Medical Center from an automobile crash that occurred in May 2014. During the course of the investigation, Troopers were able to show that Simmons acted with intent to defraud Progressive Insurance of $4,115.00 with fraudulent medical bills. LSP IF/AT Troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Simmons and located her this morning at her residence. She was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Center and booked on 2 counts of Automobile Insurance Fraud.

LSP Investigators work closely with the LA Department of Insurance, local judicial offices, and the Louisiana Attorney General’s office in successfully bringing individuals involved in committing insurance fraud to justice. The Insurance Fraud Unit has field offices located throughout the state in which Troopers investigate various types of insurance fraud cases such as staged crashes, “jump-in” crashes, fraudulent injury claims, worker’s compensation fraud, forged medical records, and inflated property claims.
