Lafourche Parish Crash Takes the Life of Thibodaux Man

Thibodaux, LA – Shortly after 5:30 this evening, Troop C was notified of a two-vehicle crash involving a fatality on LA 20 near Sugar Ridge Drive. The crash took the life of 85 year old Percy Chiasson.

The preliminary investigation by Troopers revealed Chiasson was traveling north on LA 20 in a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. For reasons still under investigation, Chiasson ran off of the road to the right as he entered a left curve in the highway. Chiasson then steered to the left and reentered the highway. He crossed the centerline and his vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling south on LA 20. It was being driven by 24 year old Victoria Zungia-Galvez of Thibodaux. Chiasson suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Zungia and her 2 year old male passenger suffered moderate injuries and were transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance Service. All occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Alcohol and drug use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, standard toxicology tests are pending on the part of Chiasson. Zungia provided a blood sample and toxicology tests are pending through the State Police Crime Lab.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
