TROOP C NEWS RELEASE March 18, 2017 Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Usage Contributes to Two Separate Fatal Crashes in Terrebonne Parish Troopers from Troop C responded to two fatal crashes in the Houma area this morning. The first was a two-vehicle crash involving an unrestrained driver and the second involved a single-vehicle crash where alcohol is suspected to be a factor. Troopers witness these types of crashes far too often where injuries could be lessened and fatal consequences could be avoided if different choices were made prior to getting on the road. Crashes happen when we do not expect them and being prepared by wearing your seat belt and not driving impaired can often prevent these tragedies from happening. The first crash took place on LA 660 near Bayou Gardens Boulevard shortly before 6:00 am. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2011 Ford Ranger was being driven southbound on LA 660 by 31 year old Britt Domangue of Houma, LA. For unknown reasons, Domangue ran off of the roadway to the right and struck a bridge guardrail. His vehicle reentered the highway and crossed the centerline where it was struck by a northbound 2010 Honda Element being driven by 24 year old Mercedes Patterson of Abilene, TX. Domangue was not wearing his seat belt and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Patterson was properly restrained and suffered moderate injuries. She was transported to Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital by Acadian Ambulance Service. Drug and alcohol involvement is unknown at this time; however, standard toxicology tests are pending on the part of Domangue. Patterson is not suspected to be impaired. The crash remains under investigation. The second crash occurred shortly before 7:30 am on Southdown Mandalay Road east of Savanne Road. The preliminary investigation revealed 30 year old Karen Owen of Houma was traveling west on Southdown Mandalay in a 2005 Cadillac Deville. She entered an S-curve in the roadway when for unknown reasons, ran off of the roadway to the right. Owen steered to the left and then ran off of the roadway to the left where she impacted a tree and became partially submerged in Bayou Black. Owen sustained fatal injuries despite being properly restrained. She was pronounced deceased by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash and standard toxicology tests are pending. Contact Information: | |||
