Three Vehicle Crash on LA 20 Claims the Life of a Thibodaux Resident

Chackbay, LA- Earlier this morning, Troopers investigated a three vehicle fatality crash on LA 20 in Lafourche Parish. The crash occurred shortly after 11 am and claimed the life of a Thibodaux resident.

The investigation revealed that a 2005 International 18-wheeler was traveling north on the LA 20 in Lafourche Parish. The International was being driven by Noe Avalos (age 27) of Vacherie, LA. For unknown reasons, the International crossed the centerline and entered the southbound lane of LA 20. At the same time, a 1998 International 18-wheeler was traveling south on LA 20 approaching the 2005 International. The 1998 International was being driven by Mauro Ildefonso (age 31) of Thibodaux, LA. As the 2005 International crossed the centerline, it sideswiped the 1998 International. The 2005 International continued to travel into the southbound lane and struck a 2008 Hyundai Santé Fe head-on that was also traveling south on LA 20 behined the 1998 International. The Santé Fe was being driven by Kristi Marse (age 44) of Thibodaux, LA. Marse, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Avalos and Ildefonso were both wearing seat belts and were not injured in the crash.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Marse. Avalos and Ildefonso submitted to a breath tests and were cleared of any alcohol involvement. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
