Head-On Crash Claims the Life of a Baton Rouge Resident

Raceland, LA- Yesterday afternoon, Troopers investigated a two vehicle fatality crash on LA 182 in Lafourche Parish. The crash occurred shortly after 4 pm and claimed the life of a Baton Rouge resident after his vehicle was struck head-on by a vehicle passing in a no passing zone.

The investigation revealed that a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling east on the LA 182 in Lafourche Parish. The Camaro was being driven by Ernest Harris (B/M age 22) of Bridge City, LA. As the Camaro was traveling east on LA 182 it crossed the centerline and began to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone. At the same time, a 2013 Nissan Altima was traveling west on LA 182 approaching the Camaro. The Altima was being driven by Fred Walker (B/M age 55) of Baton Rouge, LA. Walker was unable to avoid the crash, and the two vehicles struck head-on. Harris, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle during the crash. Harris was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Walker, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.

Impairment is unknown at this time. Blood was taken from Harris and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Walker. This crash remains under investigation.

Never pass in a no passing zone. Always pass when it is safe to do so, and in zones marked for passing. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
