Pedestrian Succumbs to Serious Injuries in Thibodaux Crash

Thibodaux, LA – Shortly before 3:30 this morning, Troopers from Troop C responded to a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian on LA 307 near Green Acres Drive in Thibodaux, LA. Pedestrian Billy Dempster, 48 year old of Thibodaux, was struck and sustained serious injuries. Dempster died from his injuries later today.

Preliminary investigation revealed Heath Santiny, 38 year old of Vacherie, LA, was traveling south on LA 307 in a 2012 Ford F-150. Dempster was walking near the center of the southbound lane when he was struck. He was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans for treatment. Santiny did not sustain any injuries.

Drug and alcohol involvement is unknown on the part of Dempster; however, standard toxicology tests are pending. Santiny submitted to an alcohol test with negative results.

Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes could prevent most pedestrian related crashes.
