Unrestrained Driver Ejected and Killed in Assumption Parish Crash

Plattenville, LA- Troopers investigated a fatality crash on LA 403 in Assumption Parish today. The crash occurred shortly before noon and claimed the life of a 63 year old Napoleonville resident after she was ejected from her vehicle.

The investigation revealed that a 1996 Grand Marquis was traveling south on LA 403, near mailbox number 645. The Marquis was being driven by Thelma Rainey (age 63) of Napoleonville, LA. The Marquis had just exited a left curve in the road, when for unknown reasons, the driver turned her vehicle sharply to the right. The Marquis exited the road and entered a ditch, where it overturned. Rainey, who was not properly restrained, was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office. Rainey was the only occupant inside the vehicle during the crash.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
