Crash Kills New Orleans Man in Lafourche Parish

Lockport, LA- Shortly before 9 pm yesterday evening, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that claimed the life of a 30 year old New Orleans man on LA 308 in Lafourche Parish.

The investigation revealed that a 2000 Nissan Altima was traveling north on LA 308, just north of the Valentine Bridge. The Altima was being driven by Omar Faruk, 30 years old from New Orleans, LA. As the Altima was traveling north on LA 308, it failed to negotiate a slight left hand curve in the road. The Altima traveled off the right side of LA 308 and then re-entered the road. As the Altima re-entered the road, it began to rotate and traveled into the southbound lane of LA 308. A southbound 2014 Chrysler Town and Country Van struck the Altima on the driver’s side. The Chrysler was being driven by Joshua Johns, 32 years old from Port Charlotte, FL. Faruk, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Johns, who was properly restrained, was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center with minor injuries.

Impairment is unknown at this time. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Faruk. Blood was taken from Johns and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving and distracted driving. Never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
